WHY
In the case that you are not privy, we are in a period of excess. A period of inauthenticity, of imitation. Where there was once the noble pursuit of technical prowess, calculated approach and true meaning, if it could be called that, we now possess the priority of feeling and expression. I have an appreciation for Jackson Pollock, as a matter of fact I am truly in love with his efforts and ethos, and he is one of my most idled artists, I do however despise the possibility he has opened to the contemporary. I can easily rationalize his despise of Andy Warhol’s approach, but even in that case he truly lived it, passionately. Looking back onto the formative experiences I recall an expression of my technical writing class during which the professor, in one of our many post-class conversations, stated that “one cannot break the rules until they have mastered them.” This sentiment is evident in the likes of not only Pollock, but Picasso and De Kooning, and I can think of no more relevant statement on how expression is to be executed.
